Share of patients receiving long-acting insulin prescriptions written by endocrinologists in LA trails state and nation

Of observed Type 2 diabetes patients in Los Angeles who filled a prescription written by an endocrinologist in calendar year 2008, just 27.7% received a long-acting insulin product, the lowest share of the local California markets profiled. By comparison, a more robust 35.2% of patients in Bakersfield who filled a prescription written by an endocrinologist were prescribed a long-acting insulin. The Los Angeles patient share for this measure was similarly well below the statewide (30.1%) and nationwide (32.7%) shares. The share of Type 2 diabetes patients in Los Angeles who were persistent with their long-acting insulin prescriptions at month 12 (65.0%) was also lower than the patient shares statewide (66.6%) or nationally (65.3%).
